Juan Bautista de Anza Trail (discovered 1795, long 1200 miles)

The trail begins in San Ignacio de Tubac, following the Santa Cruz River to the Mission San Xavier del Bac, continuing the Santa Cruz River until the Gila River. Following the Gila and crossed the Colorado near Yuma. Then turning northwest, across the farthest edge of the Sonoran Desert and through the southern reaches of Califonia's coastal mountan range, passing the missions of San Gabriel Arcangel, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and San Antonio de Padua, arrived at the Royal Presidio of Monterey and finally at San Francisco.
